Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement on the occasion of the 8th annual Canadian Forces Day:
“Today, Canadians from coast-to-coast-to-coast come together to celebrate and thank those who serve in the Canadian Forces. Throughout Canada and around the world, the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces are always prepared to defend our interests, protect our sovereignty and advance the Canadian values of freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
“While the Canadian Forces continue to keep our citizens safe and secure at home and serve bravely in important missions around the world, their service is most visible in the United-Nations mandated, NATO-led mission in Afghanistan. All Canadians can be proud of the tremendous courage our military personnel show as they work to enhance global security and bring hope to a historically troubled part of the world. Today, and all days, our thoughts and prayers go out to them and their families.
“Today is also a day for us to say ‘thank you’ to the families of those who serve in the Canadian Forces. Our military families sacrifice so much when they spend time apart from their loved ones. I ask that all Canadians keep our military families in mind and, whenever possible, do what you can to support the families of Canadian Forces personnel in your own communities.
“The men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces represent the true spirit of courage, selfless service, and belief in a better world. They are true heroes who represent the very best of what it means to be Canadian. On behalf of the Government of Canada and all Canadians, I want to express my appreciation to all Canadian Forces members and their families. We owe them a debt of gratitude and pledge to them our continued support.”
