Labrador City, Newfoundland and Labrador - The Town of Labrador City will upgrade the Labrador City Arena with support provided by the Government of Canada through its Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) Program, a key economic stimulus initiative under Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, Minister for the Atlantic Gateway and Minister responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced an investment of more than $315,000 for significant upgrades to the arena.
“The Labrador City Arena is a vital component of this community and is home to the Polaris Figure Skating Club and the Labrador West Minor Hockey Association,” said Minister MacKay. “The funding of these improvements will ensure that families, teams and individuals will continue to have access to this important facility and it supports the local economy through the business and construction activity it generates.”
The project will involve construction of a new addition to the existing arena to house the refrigeration equipment. The town will also install decking to cover the rink floor. The ice cover will allow for utilization of the arena for recreational sports such as ball hockey and indoor soccer.
Canada’s Economic Action Plan provided $500 million over two years for the RInC program, to support the upgrading and renewal of recreational facilities in communities across the country, generating local economic activity, supporting jobs and encouraging increased participation in physical activity and community building.
Municipalities, First Nations governments, community organizations and other not-for-profit entities in Atlantic Canada that have eligible projects that can be completed before March 31, 2011, are invited to submit their proposals.
