Clarenville, Newfoundland and Labrador
The Government of Canada is investing more than $617,000 in Clarenville and the Bonavista Peninsula as part of its Economic Action Plan. The Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency), was in town today to announce five projects approved for funding through the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) and the Recreational Infrastructure Canada Program (RInC).
“The Government of Canada is pleased to invest a total of $617,220 in these projects in Clarenville and Port Union. These investments will create jobs during this global economic downturn and into the future,” said Minister Ashfield. “Our Government has invested significant resources through our Economic Action Plan to strengthen Canada’s economic position and to respond with unprecedented urgency to ensure funding flows as quickly as possible.”
The Town of Clarenville, in partnership with the Clarenville Area Recreation Association and the Clarenville Area Soccer Association will construct a clubhouse for the existing soccer field and develop an oval track around the field. This investment will include the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) funding of $50,000 through the RInC program and $25,001 through Service Canada's Job Creation Partnerships (JCP) program. This initiative is being supported by the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Labour Market Development Agreement.
The Alpine Development Alliance Corporation, which operates the alpine skiing resort at White Hills, will carry out improvements to existing facilities including the upgrade, repair and enhancements of the resort’s buildings, maintenance of downhill ski runs, and maintenance/upgrades to access roads. The ACOA investment of $342,800 is being provided through the Community Adjustment Fund.
The Eastern School District will upgrade two existing playgrounds at schools in the Clarenville area. The project activities include site preparation and the purchase and installation of equipment necessary to bring the playgrounds at Balbo Elementary and Clarenville Primary up to an acceptable safety standard. The ACOA investment of $25,547 is being provided through the RInC program.
The Clarenville Nordic Ski Club will upgrade existing ski trails and facilities in Clarenville to improve the winter tourism infrastructure in the area. The project involves improvements to approximately 25 kms of the existing cross- country ski trail system adjacent to the White Hills Ski Resort; extension of the Lee Churchill Ski Chalet to include washroom facilities; construction of a 12’ x 12’ open shed for the storage of fire wood and ski equipment; and refinishing of the exterior of the existing chalet and three warm-up huts. The ACOA investment of $101,410 is being provided through the Community Adjustment Fund.
The Sir William F Coaker Heritage Foundation Inc will restore the interior of the Row House II, a recognized part of the Port Union National Historic District. The Foundation will also undertake traditional-style landscaping in the back garden. The ACOA investment of $72,462 is being provided through the Community Adjustment Fund.
Over the next two years, CAF will deliver a total of $100.4 million to local economies throughout Atlantic Canada, as a major job creating initiative. The initial allocation under RInC for Atlantic Canada is $12 million to support upgrading and renewal of recreational facilities in communities.
Projects to be funded under CAF could include reforestation activities, investments in machinery or equipment, demonstration of new mining technologies, initiatives to improve market access for products and other local economic diversification activities.
Non-profit organizations; post-secondary institutions; individuals; co-operatives; small and medium-sized enterprises; First Nations governments; and provincial and municipal governments that have eligible projects that can be completed before March 31, 2011 are invited to submit proposals.
Under RInC, the Government of Canada will typically fund up to 33 per cent of eligible costs. The remaining funding will be leveraged from other project stakeholders such as provincial, territorial, municipal and other partners. The federal contribution to any project receiving funding under the program will not exceed $1 million. Projects will be selected on the basis of merit and construction readiness, and must be completed before March 31, 2011.
