100 Mile House, British Columbia
100 Mile House will move forward with the construction of new soccer fields thanks to funding from three levels of government.
Today, Cathy McLeod, Member of Parliament for Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, Donna Barnett, Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA and Al Richmond, Cariboo Regional District Chair, announced federal, provincial and municipal funding for the 100 Mile House and District Soccer Association that will improve recreational opportunities for local residents.
"These soccer field improvements in 100 Mile House will serve our community and surrounding communities for years to come," said MP McLeod. "I'm pleased that our Government's RInC funding will allow the Soccer Association to increase the potential for hosting soccer tournaments and traffic for local businesses."
Funding for the 100 Mile House and District Soccer Association will allow for the construction of two new fields. Project activities will include surface grading, topsoil seeding, site preparation and drainage, as well as the installation of an irrigation system.
"I am excited for soccer players in 100 Mile House who will have the pleasure of enjoying their sport on these new fields," said Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett. " It is great to see this federal investment in the community which provides both improved sport infrastructure as well as creating jobs when people need them most."
The total cost of the project is $387,274. Federal funding of $193,637 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program under Canada's Economic Action Plan. The Province of British Columbia is investing $100,000 and the Cariboo Regional District is contributing $32,500.
"I am very happy that the provincial and federal governments have so generously supported this community project," stated CRD Chair Al Richmond. " The project will not only provide an excellent venue for our community sporting events, but will subscribe to the promotion of active lifestyles which plays a vital role in developing healthy and vibrant communities."
"We, the 100 Mile House and District Soccer Association, are extremely excited that our funding application for fields number three and four were approved. This will move our completion date at least one year ahead and will enable our kids to play on those fields in 2011. Furthermore, this high-class soccer facility will be hosting soccer players from all over BC and beyond and therefore positively impact our community's economy for years to come," said Werner Heine, Communications and Sponsorship Director, 100 Mile House and District Soccer Association.
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
