Shippagan, New Brunswick
The grand opening of the Regional Pool in Shippagan made a splash with residents and officials alike, as representatives from all three levels of government officially inaugurated the new facility.
"The Government of Canada is pleased to support projects that enhance the vibrancy of our New Brunswick communities," said the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency). "Our investment of more than $1 million has helped the Town of Shippagan build this much-anticipated regional pool facility, which will benefit residents of and visitors to Shippagan and Northeastern New Brunswick."
"The Province of New Brunswick is proud to be an important partner in today's celebration," said Transportation Minister Denis Landry. "Our investment in this facility will provide services for our youth and all community groups, improve the quality of their lives, and help us on our journey toward self-sufficiency."
"This new major infrastructure, favoring the health and well being of our population, is an important element for the development of our region," said Jonathan Roch Noël, Mayor of Shippagan. "We are very proud to have created a first in our region through a partnership with certain local service districts and the municipality of Ste-Marie-St-Raphael for their operations.
The project involved constructing a regional pool facility adjacent to the sport pavilion of the University of Moncton – Shippagan campus. The facility, equipped with hot water heating, contains a 25-metre pool, including a mini-pool separated by a wall and a waterslide.
In 2006, ACOA, the Province of New Brunswick and the Town of Shippagan announced a $1.1 million contribution each towards the more than $4-million project, through the Canada-New Brunswick Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund. In 2008, the Province of New Brunswick announced additional funding of $390,000 with the Town of Shippagan providing an additional $342,498.
