Ottawa, Ontario
Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement today on the historic occasion of two Canadian astronauts currently in space:
“Canadians are rightfully proud of our country’s quarter-century of leadership in the exploration of space. From the earliest uses of the groundbreaking Canadarm to the next-generation Canadian robotics used in the construction of the International Space Station, Canadian expertise and experience are playing a growing role in the exploration of the final frontier.”
“This week we are marking a special milestone in Canada’s history of space exploration. For the first time ever two Canadian astronauts, Julie Payette and Robert Thirsk, are in orbit at the same time; each is playing a vital role in an international space mission.”
“Dr. Thirsk has been playing a key role on the multinational International Space Station Crew for the past six weeks. Ms. Payette will be spending the next two weeks involved in a key role in a complicated robotics operation to expand the station - a mission that will also depend heavily on Canadarm and Canadarm 2 technology.”
“I congratulate Dr. Thirsk and Ms. Payette for their latest accomplishment. Both astronauts serve as tremendous role models for any young Canadian interested in pursuing a career in science, technology and engineering.”
“I also congratulate all of the scientists, researchers, engineers and other professionals at the Canadian Space Agency. Thanks to your hard work and dedication, Canada continues to have a record of which we can all be proud.”
