Moncton, New Brunswick - The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), in partnership with the Newfoundland Aquaculture Industry Association (NAIA), will lead an Atlantic Canadian aquaculture sector science and technology transfer and trade mission to Norway, August 15-22, 2009.
The Government of Canada, through ACOA, is investing $150,200 to support this mission. The National Research Council is also contributing to this initiative.
Delegates from the 15 Atlantic Canadian aquaculture companies and organizations taking part in this mission will attend Aqua Nor 2009, the world’s largest aquaculture trade show, in Trondheim, Norway. They will also continue building upon success generated when ACOA and NAIA collaborated to deliver similar missions to Norway in 2003, 2005 and 2007.
“With exports of $146 million in 2008, aquaculture is one of Atlantic Canada’s leading export sectors, and thus a key component to our region’s economy,” said the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State (ACOA). “ACOA is committed to helping companies within the aquaculture industry increase their export potential.”
“AquaNor is the aquaculture industry’s premier trade show and we are pleased that a strong delegation from Atlantic Canada will be on hand to share their expertise, maintain existing relationships and foster new ones,” said Miranda Pryor, Executive Director of NAIA.
Atlantic Canadian delegates will learn about the latest in research and development and will establish relationships critical in their efforts to increase sales. In turn, delegates from other countries will have the opportunity to learn from their Atlantic Canada counterparts, who are recognized globally as technology leaders in the aquaculture industry.
The aquaculture industry in Atlantic Canada is a dynamic system of food production that is driven by producers of salmon, mussels and oysters.
The industry is supported by world class research and development facilities, suppliers that manufacture everything from cages to automatic feeding systems, associations that provide a strong voice, as well as governments that recognize the value of the industry and work together with key stakeholders to promote opportunities for growth.
