PETITCODIAC, New Brunswick
Residents of Petitcodiac will soon be able to enjoy upgraded facilities at the village arena thanks to investments from the Government of Canada’s Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) Program, a key economic stimulus initiative under Canada’s Economic Action Plan, and the Province of New Brunswick.
Rob Moore, Member of Parliament for Fundy Royal, on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency) and the Honourable Wally Stiles, Minister of Natural Resources, today announced $500,000 for the improvements to the Petitcodiac arena.
“Our government, through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, is taking steps to reduce the effect of the economic slowdown,” said MP Moore. “Through the RInC Program, we are helping Canada’s economy by supporting upgrades to existing recreational facilities across New Brunswick and our federal investment of $250,000 in this recreational facility will add to the quality of life in Petitcodiac for years to come.”
“Ensuring that we have good recreational facilities will help improve the quality of life for residents of Petitcodiac, strengthen our communities, and help us work toward self-sufficiency,” said Minister Stiles, on behalf of Business New Brunswick Minister Victor Boudreau, who is minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation. “The Province of New Brunswick is proud to be a partner in this important infrastructure project for Petitcodiac.”
The project includes replacing the concrete floor and the refrigeration system, installing new piping, as well as adding new boards in the Petitcodiac arena, which was built in 1974. This project will benefit residents of Petitcodiac as well as youth and seniors in nearby communities who also use the facility.
“On behalf of the Village of Petitcodiac I would like to say how pleased we are to be working in partnership with both the Federal and Provincial Government to enable us to move forward with this project,” said Petitcodiac Mayor Peter Saunders. “The arena is enjoyed by our youth and seniors alike, as well as by many citizens from the surrounding areas. The arena upgrade will ensure we can continue to provide a safe and healthy recreational facility for all to enjoy.”
The Government of Canada, through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), is contributing $250,000 toward the project under the RInC Program. The Province of New Brunswick, through the Regional Development Corporation, is providing $250,000; while the Village of Petitcodiac is contributing the remaining $250,000.
The RInC Program is providing $500 million over two years to support the upgrading and renewal of recreational facilities in communities, and to encourage increased participation in physical activity and community building.
