Brabant Lake, Saskatchewan
Brabant Lake will move forward with upgrades to its outdoor arena thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada's Economic Action Plan.
Today, the Honourable Jeremy Harrison, Minister of Saskatchewan Municipal Affairs, and Rob Clarke, Member of Parliament for Desnethe – Missinippi – Churchill River, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced funding for a new cement floor in Brabant Lake's outdoor arena that will create jobs for the community.
"The Government of Saskatchewan understands the importance of the local arena to a healthy and active community," said Harrison. "Our investment in this project will increase recreational opportunities that will benefit the whole community."
"Our Government is taking action to create jobs and build stronger communities," said MP Clarke. "I'm proud that our investment will allow the families of Brabant Lake to better use their facility year round. The construction of a cement pad for Brabant Lake's outdoor rink will ensure the community has access to recreational opportunities today, and in the future."
Funding of $13,333 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada's Economic Action Plan. The Province of Saskatchewan will provide a matching contribution and the Northern Settlement of Brabant Lake will also contribute $13,334 to the infrastructure project.
The project includes pouring a cement pad to provide a smoother surface on the floor of the ice rink located in the Northern Settlement of Brabant Lake. This upgrade will allow the community to use the outdoor rink year-round through the replacement of the dirt floor pad with a concrete base. The smooth surface allows for easier flooding in the winter and a level-playing surface in the summer.
"The rink will be used throughout the year and everyone from the community will benefit greatly from it," said Eugene McLeod, Local Advisory Committee Chairperson.
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
