Burnt Cove, Newfoundland and Labrador - Softball enthusiasts from Bay Bulls to Bauline will have access soon to a rebuilt softball field at Burnt Cove, thanks in part to support provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a key economic stimulus initiative under Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
Senator Fabian Manning announced a commitment today of $5,450 to the project on behalf of the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, Minister for the Atlantic Gateway and Minister responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador.
“The Government of Canada’s support for the renovation and restoration of recreational facilities in communities across the country is designed to help generate and support local economic activity right now,” said Senator Manning. “At the same time, we are ensuring that Canadians have access to valuable recreational infrastructure that will benefit them for years to come.”
The level of importance that communities attached to these facilities, noted Senator Manning, is often demonstrated in the very strong level of volunteer support that projects like the rebuilding of the Burnt Cove ball field attract.
The Burnt Cove-St. Michael’s-Bauline Regional Recreation Association Inc., in partnership with the Burnt Cove Softball Restoration Committee Inc., will make improvements to the existing ball field by stripping and re-grading the field; removing existing dugouts and installing footings for new dugouts; upgrading the parks fencing; supplying and distributing silica sand within the infield area and supplying and distributing sod over the outfield area.
Canada’s Economic Action Plan is providing $500 million over two years through the RInC program, to support the renewal of recreational facilities in communities across the country, generating local economic activity; supporting jobs; and, encouraging increased participation in physical activity and community building.
Municipalities, First Nations governments, community organizations and other not-for-profit entities in Atlantic Canada that have eligible projects that can be completed before March 31, 2011, are invited to submit their proposals.
