Capital improvements to the Alaska Highway will help the economy of Northern B.C. and create jobs
For immediate release
FORT NELSON, B.C., August 6, 2009 – The Government of Canada continues to invest in key infrastructure projects across the country and make a positive contribution to our nation’s economy. The Honourable Jay Hill, Member of Parliament for Prince George–Peace River and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, today announced investments of $6.7 million for major repairs and rehabilitation projects on the B.C. portion of the Alaska Highway.
“With our Economic Action Plan, this government has taken extraordinary and unprecedented action to stimulate the Canadian economy, combat the global recession and keep Canadians working,” said Mr. Hill. “Our plan represents nation-wide investment and a lasting legacy of modern and efficient government-owned infrastructure.”
Three companies were successful in submitting the lowest qualified bids in response to public tender calls for these three projects.
Peter’s Bros. Construction Ltd. of Penticton, B.C., was awarded a $3,251,398 contract to undertake 15 kilometres of asphalt paving work south of Fort Nelson. Brentwood Enterprises Ltd. of Kamloops, B.C., was the successful bidder for a $1,452,043 contract to improve an intersection and stabilize a section of the Highway about 125 kilometres north of Fort St. John. A $2,046,780 contract to repair the deck surfaces of eight bridges on the Alaska Highway was awarded to ConCreate USL Ltd. of Crossfield, Alberta. These projects are scheduled to be completed in October 2009.
“Thanks to Economic Action Plan investments like this, we are getting much-needed renovation and repair work to government infrastructure done, and done faster,” said Mr. Hill. “We’re also generating local jobs and creating long-term economic benefits.”
The Government of Canada is investing $12 billion in new infrastructure funding for roads, bridges, broadband Internet access, electronic health records, laboratories and border crossings across Canada.
