Blue River, British Columbia
Blue River will move forward with an expansion of its local ice rink, thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada's Economic Action Plan.
Today, Cathy McLeod, Member of Parliament for Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced federal funding for the project, which will create jobs for the Thompson Nicola Regional District.
“Our Government is taking immediate action to reduce the effects of the global economic slowdown and build the foundation for future growth and prosperity,” said MP McLeod. “The expanded Blue River Community Ice Rink will benefit local families for years to come.”
With projects such as the expansion of the Blue River Community Ice Rink, the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program is not only creating immediate jobs for our community, but will also help pave the way for the Thompson Nicola Regional District's future growth and prosperity.”
Funding of $53,333 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada's Economic Action Plan.
Project funding will allow the Blue River Community Association to extend the existing outdoor ice rink, and install new seating and lighting. A lightweight shell will also be erected to cover the new section of ice surface.
"This investment will help our community upgrade much needed recreational infrastructure, and help support winter tourism to Blue River," said Adam Brown, member of the Blue River Community Association. "This project will allow the rink, which continues to be supported by dedicated volunteers, to be utilized day and night by both residents, seasonal workers and visitors."
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce impacts of the global recession, while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
