Quesnel, British Columbia
Quesnel will move forward with upgrades to its arts and recreation centre thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
Today, Dick Harris, Member of Parliament for Cariboo-Prince George, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced federal funding for the Cariboo Regional District (CRD) that will create jobs for Quesnel.
“I’m pleased to announce our Government’s support for the Quesnel District Arts and Recreation Centre renovations,” said MP Harris. “The improved swimming pool and expanded fitness room will benefit our community for years to come.”
Funding of $208,000 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
The Cariboo Regional District will replace the water filtration system for its swimming and leisure pools, and expand the fitness/weight room at the Quesnel District Arts and Recreation Centre.
"This investment will help our community lead healthier, happier lives, allowing us to meet our community’s goal of becoming 20% more active by 2010,” said Mayor Mary Sjostrom. “I applaud the federal government’s leadership in revitalizing recreation infrastructure across the country.”
Replacing the existing water filtration system for the Centre's pools with a safer, more cost-efficient, and environmentally friendly sand system will provide operational benefits to the CRD and long-term health benefits to pool users. The expansion of the fitness/weight room will also enable the Centre to serve a greater number of facility users and offer a wider range of programs.
"By obtaining the funding for the new water filtration system, we will continue to provide the best in quality services and facilities to help our north Cariboo residents lead healthy and active lifestyles,” says Cariboo Regional District Vice-Chair Ted Armstrong. “This project is just one more example of what can truly be accomplished as we continue Building Communities Together.”
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
