People in Lac Baker will soon enjoy a new and improved lakeside pavilion thanks to a contribution of $30,000 from the Recreational Infrastructure Canada Program (RInC), a key Government of Canada economic stimulus initiative under Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The Honourable Percy Mockler, Senator for Saint Leonard, made the announcement today alongside Village Mayor Jean-Marc Nadeau.
“The Government of Canada recognizes the need within many Canadian communities to provide better recreational facilities,” said Senator Mockler on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency). “Our investment will allow the Village to upgrade the pavilion at Lac Baker, improving lakeside amenities for residents and encouraging more visitors to the area.”
“Thanks to this project, the municipality will be able to provide better services to visitors who come to the park to relax and enjoy our beautiful beach,” said Mayor Nadeau. “We believe the renovations will help us increase the number of visitors who visit the park.”
The project involves renovations to the municipal pavilion located on the shores of Lac Baker. Improvements to the facility will include new washrooms and change areas for users of the recreational facility. Outdoor activities offered at the lake include water sports, beach volleyball, and hiking. The project will enhance these and other recreational activities for both residents and visitors for years to come, as well as create employment over the eight- week construction period.
The Government of Canada is providing $30,000 to the project through RInC, while the Village of Lac Baker is investing $65,990.
Canada's Economic Action Plan is providing $500 million over two years for the RInC program to support the upgrading and renewal of recreational facilities in communities. Under RInC, the Government of Canada will typically fund up to 33 per cent of eligible costs. The remaining funding will be leveraged from other project stakeholders such as provincial, territorial, municipal and other partners. The federal contribution to any project receiving funding under the program will not exceed $1 million. Projects will be selected on the basis of merit and construction readiness, and must be completed before March 31, 2011.
