Alameda, Saskatchewan
Alameda will be able to move forward with arena upgrades thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job creating investment from Canada's Economic Action Plan.
Today, Ed Komarnicki, Member of Parliament for Souris - Moose Mountain, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification and Dan D'Autremont, MLA for Cannington, on behalf of the Honourable Jeremy Harrison, Minister of Saskatchewan Municipal Affairs, announced federal funding for upgrades to the local arena that will create jobs for the community.
"Our Government, through Canada's Economic Action Plan, is providing timely, targeted investments in western Canadian communities to help create immediate jobs and to improve recreational infrastructure in our region," said MP Komarnicki. "This investment in the Alameda arena is welcomed and will ensure that the community can enjoy their arena for years to come."
The total cost of the project is $167,800. Federal funding of $55,933 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada's Economic Action Plan. The provincial government and the Town of Alameda have each matched the federal contribution.
Arena upgrades will ensure that the local rink remains a viable asset within the community, reducing the quantity and cost of energy being used.
"The Government of Saskatchewan understands the importance of the Alameda arena to a healthy and active community," said Dan D'Autremont, MLA for Cannington. "Our investment in this project will increase recreational opportunities that will benefit the whole community."
"Our community is very pleased to receive this grant to help with much needed improvements to our local arena. The improvements that will be completed with this grant will help to ensure that our local arena will continue to serve the residents of Alameda and surrounding area for many years to come," said Allan Faber, Mayor, Town of Alameda. "The Alameda Community Rink project along with other ongoing infrastructure projects in the Town of Alameda will allow this community to move confidently into the future."
Work on the arena will include:
- replacing the roof, siding and doors;
- replacing the power line connection and existing power transformer;
- painting the dressing rooms, bleachers and lobby;
- replacing the flooring in dressing rooms;
- upgrading the electrical wiring; and,
- installing energy efficient lighting in the lobby.
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
