The Town of Bienfait will move forward with renovations to the arena thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada's Economic Action Plan.
Today, Ed Komarnicki Member of Parliament for Souris-Moose Mountain on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, and Doreen Eagles, MLA for Estevan, on behalf of the Honourable Jeremy Harrison, Minister of Saskatchewan Municipal Affairs, announced funding for improvements to the local rink to that will create jobs for the community of Bienfait.
"Our Government is taking timely targeted action to help put Canadians to work, encourage greater participation in physical activity and promote the use of recreational facilities.," said MP Komarnicki. "This investment will modernize the Bienfait arena while increasing both safety and access."
Funding of $21,554 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada's Economic Action Plan. The Province of Saskatchewan will provide a matching contribution and the Town of Bienfait will fund the balance for a total estimated project cost of $64,662.
Improvements at the rink include the installation of a wheelchair lift, safety netting, Plexiglass, a new fire door and new flooring. These renovations will improve the safety for the athletes and sports fans using the facility.
"The Government of Saskatchewan understands the importance of the Bienfait arena to a healthy and active community," said Eagles. "Our investment in this project will increase recreational opportunities that will benefit the whole community."
"These funds will help to complete repairs and badly needed upgrades," said Garry Hammett, Mayor of the Town of Bienfait. "The rink not only provides a place for sport and recreation for the town and surrounding areas, but it is a central gathering place for families and friends of all ages to have coffee and to catch up. Small towns are an integral part of the Province. Thank you for helping to sustain the rural way of life."
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
