Elbow will upgrade its fitness centre and arena thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada's Economic Action Plan.
Today, the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, and Greg Brkich, Deputy Speaker and MLA for Arm River-Watrous, on behalf of the Honourable Jeremy Harrison, Saskatchewan Minister of Municipal Affairs, announced federal funding for the Elbow recreational infrastructure project that will create jobs in Elbow.
"Investments like the one today will help ensure the Village of Elbow has access to essential recreational infrastructure," said Minister of State Yelich "By upgrading the roof, this project will extend the use of the fitness centre and arena, while creating local jobs in the community."
Funding of $3,333 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada's Economic Action Plan. The Government of Saskatchewan and the Village of Elbow are providing matching contributions for a total project cost of $10,000.
Elbow will upgrade their fitness centre and arena to prevent complete failure of the roof, assuring the utility of the facility will be extended. Upgrades to the facility will include: replacing approximately 15% of 20,000 steel roof fasteners, re-caulking all points, and replacement or repair of all roof flashing.
"The Government of Saskatchewan understands the importance of the Elbow arena to a healthy and active community," said Stewart. "Our investment in this project will increase recreational opportunities that will benefit the whole community."
"Thanks to the federal and provincial governments, we can now proceed with repairing the steel roof of our arena and fitness centre," said Elbow Mayor David Cross. "This investment will not only stop on-going water damage to our newly renovated lobby and kitchen area, but it will promote the use of the facility and encourage the cultural and physical well-being of our citizens."
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
