Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan
The Town of Yellow Grass will move forward with upgrades to the local hockey rink thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
Today, the Honourable Dustin Duncan, Minister of Tourism, Parks, Culture and Recreation, on behalf of the Honourable Jeremy Harrison, Minister of Saskatchewan Municipal Affairs and Ed Komarnicki, Member of Parliament for Souris-Moose Mountain, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced funding for renovations to the hockey rink that will create jobs for Yellow Grass.
“ The Government of Saskatchewan understands the importance of the Yellow Grass rink to a healthy and active community, ” said Minister Duncan. “ Our investment in this project will increase recreational opportunities that will benefit the whole community. ”
“ Our Government is taking timely targeted action to help put Canadians to work, encourage greater participation in physical activity and use of recreational facilities, ” said MP Komarnicki. “ This investment will ensure our community has to access to the modern and efficient infrastructure we need today, and in the future. ”
Funding of $66,666 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The Province of Saskatchewan will provide a matching contribution and the Town of Yellow Grass will fund the balance through its capital projects reserve fund for a total estimated project cost of $200,000.
Upgrades include construction of dressing rooms, renovations to the Zamboni room, insulating the ceiling and installing energy efficient lighting in the hockey rink. These improvements will increase the energy efficiency and general serviceability of the rink.
“ We have had tremendous support from our surrounding community for fundraising, volunteering, and participation in events, ” said Alan Whitrow, President of the Yellow Grass Rink Board. “ It is an encouraging sign to have both governments step up and provide additional funding for local jobs and community facilities. It is an incredible vote of confidence and confirmation that the vision this community had in 1948, also in the late 80's and again now, that caused them to build and upgrade this facility was a valuable one. It is an affirmation to our new residents that Yellow Grass is a vibrant and forward thinking community to be a part of. ”
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
