Thorsby, Alberta
The Village of Thorsby received federal support thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada's Economic Action Plan.
Today, Blaine Calkins, Member of Parliament for Wetaskiwin, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced federal funding that will help improve a vital Village of Thorsby recreational infrastructure asset.
" This investment will ensure that families in the Thorsby area have access to a broad range of safe recreational programming for years to come, " said MP Calkins. “ Through Canada's Economic Action Plan, our Government is creating immediate jobs and building the foundation for future growth. ”
Federal funding of $333,333 is provided under the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, as a part of Canada's Economic Action Plan.
“ The Village of Thorsby is excited to be able to redevelop our recreation centre and enhance the level of service we are able to provide to our residents and this region, ” said Village of Thorsby Mayor Allan Gee. “ This new face of recreation in Thorsby will enhance the quality of life for countless groups and individuals and allow us to flourish as a recreation leader in rural Canada. ”
“ Leduc County is thrilled the Village of Thorsby's recreation centre will be redeveloped, and we're glad to help fund part of the project, ” says Leduc County Mayor Marvin Molzan. “ The County continually strives to enhance recreation opportunities for its residents; the centre will not only create new recreation opportunities, but will strengthen and highlight regional partnerships. ”
Upgrades to the Thorsby Recreational Complex include redeveloping the building to meet safety standards and reconfiguring activity areas to support a wider range of practical sports and recreational uses. Upon completion, residents in the area and surrounding communities will have access to new recreational programs such as gymnastics, dance, fitness, and sports conditioning and training. The project reflects the Government of Canada's commitment to improve the quality of life for residents, promote an active and healthy lifestyle and spur the local economy through construction activity.
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
