OTTAWA, August 7, 2009 – The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the Competition Tribunal, today announced the appointment of Mr. Ralph Tannis as a lay member of the Tribunal.
“I am very pleased to welcome Mr. Tannis to the Tribunal. He has considerable experience in business, economics and public service that will benefit the Tribunal,” said Minister Clement. “His knowledge of business and markets will help the Tribunal as it hears and renders decisions on competition matters.”
Mr. Tannis is the founder of Fat Albert’s restaurants and Ralph’s bars. He has been a commissioner for taking affidavits through over 14 governments in the Province of Ontario since 1972. He has also been president of RGIAN Corporation, a holding and parent company, from 1972 to 2006. From 1977 to 1986, he served as a member on the CHEZ-FM Board of Directors, as well as an Executive Director from 1983 to 1984.
Mr. Tannis has been active in community service, serving as, among others, Chair of the National Capital Commission from 1989 to 1995, and was also a member on the Central Canada Exhibition Association Board of Directors from 1983 to 1998.
The Competition Tribunal is a specialized tribunal combines expertise in economics and business with legal expertise. It is composed of judicial and non-judicial, or lay, members. The Tribunal is a strictly adjudicative body that operates independently of any government department.
