The Town of Big River will upgrade its arena upgrades thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada's Economic Action Plan.
Today, Rob Clarke, Member of Parliament for Desnethé – Missinippi – Churchill River, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, and Nadine Wilson, MLA for Saskatchewan Rivers, on behalf of the Honourable Jeremy Harrison, Minister of Saskatchewan Municipal Affairs, announced funding for upgrades to the local arena that will create jobs for the community of Big River.
" Our Government, through Canada's Economic Action Plan, is taking timely targeted action to help put Canadians to work, encourage greater participation in physical activity and use of recreational facilities, " said MP Clarke. " Arena upgrades in Big River will ensure our community has access to the essential infrastructure we need today, and in the future. "
Funding of $9,658 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada's Economic Action Plan. The Province of Saskatchewan will provide a matching contribution and the Town of Big River will fund the balance for a total estimated project cost of $28,975.
The Town of Big River will replace the existing arena roof over the zamboni room and upgrade the electrical, heating and cooling systems. These improvements will maintain this facility and prolong its life for residents of Big River and the surrounding area.
" The Government of Saskatchewan understands the importance of the Big River arena upgrades to a healthy and active community, " said MLA Wilson. " Our investment in this project will increase recreational opportunities that will benefit the whole community. "
" The community of Big River couldn't be happier to receive this Recreation Infrastructure Canada investment as our arena desperately needs it ", said Mayor Gilbert. " Investments like these are crucial to smaller communities and guarantee the use of our recreational facility for years to come. "
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
