NORTH BUXTON, Ontario, September 7, 2009 - On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, Dave Van Kesteren, Member of Parliament (Chatham¬-Kent-Essex), today announced funding for the Buxton Historical Society's 85 th annual Labour Day Homecoming Celebration.
The Labour Day Homecoming Celebration, which is being held this year from September 4 to 7, retraces the migration of African American descendants who arrived at the northern terminus of the Underground Railroad in Buxton. Live performances by 36 local artists will include music from the Chatham Concert Band, spoken-word recitals, and dance.
"Our Government is proud to honour the journey of African Americans who fled slavery and who are central to our multicultural fabric," said Minister Moore. "This longstanding commemorative event helps us preserve a crucial piece of our past while encouraging tourism in the Chatham area.
"Buxton is privileged to share in the legacy of the Canadian Underground Railroad," said Mr. Kesteren. "Thanks to the Historical Society's many volunteers, this once modest tradition has grown to incorporate an impressive range of activities and talent."
"The history and culture that have shaped this great mosaic called Canada are deeply embedded in our community," said Shannon Prince, Curator, Buxton Museum. "As the largest and most successful settlement that was established for Blacks escaping slavery in the United States and seeking freedom, we continue today as a vibrant community. This funding will enhance our
celebration as thousands reconnect with their roots, and will allow us to present the many talents of our local youth."
The Government of Canada has provided funding of $9,180 through the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program provides Canadians with more opportunities to take part in activities that present local arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage.
