Spalding, Saskatchewan
Spalding will move forward with arena upgrades thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
Today, Brad Trost Member of Parliament for Saskatoon-Humboldt, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, Fred Bradshaw, MLA for Carrot River Valley on behalf of the Honourable Jeremy Harrison, Minister of Saskatchewan Municipal Affairs announced federal funding for upgrades to the Village of Spalding’s arena that will create jobs for the community.
“Our Government is working to reduce the effects of the economic slowdown,” said MP Trost. “With projects such as repairs to flood damage to Spalding’s arena, our Economic Action Plan is not only creating immediate jobs for our community, but will also help pave the way for our future growth and prosperity.”
Funding of $7,864 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The Government of Saskatchewan will provide a matching contribution and the Village of Spalding will provide the balance of funding for a total estimated cost of $23,592.
"The Government of Saskatchewan understands the importance of the Spalding arena to a healthy and active community," said MLA Bradshaw. "Our investment in this project will increase recreational opportunities that will benefit the whole community."
Upgrades to the arena in Spalding will repair areas previously damaged by flooding. Renovations include the foundation to the zamboni room, basement walls, overhead door and flooring. These repairs will improve the safety of the facility and increase access and usage by community members.
"On behalf of the Village of Spalding I would like to express our appreciation to WD for awarding us this grant,” said Her Worship Olwen Hoffman, Mayor of Spalding. “The work needed to be done in the rink complex is extensive and of course very expensive and without the grant would have been very difficult to achieve. These improvements will be a great help in our ability to provide the community with a safe and healthy environment for residents to enjoy for many years to come."
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
