Wakaw, Saskatchewan
Wakaw will upgrade its arena thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada's Economic Action Plan.
Today, Brad Trost Member of Parliament for Saskatoon-Humboldt, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, and Delbert Kirsch, Member of the Legislative Assembly for Batoche, on behalf of the Honourable Jeremy Harrison, Minister of Saskatchewan Municipal Affairs, announced federal funding for upgrades to the Wakaw arena that will create jobs for the community.
“ I'm pleased to announce our Government's support to upgrade Wakaw's arena to be a year round facility, ” said MP Trost. “ Together, we're creating immediate jobs and building stronger, healthier communities. ”
Funding of $99,464 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program. The Province of Saskatchewan will provide a matching contribution and the Town of Wakaw will fund the balance for a total estimated project cost of $298,392.
Upgrades to the Wakaw arena include removal of the gravel surface of the rink, along with the existing underground coolant pipes, and then installation of new pipes and pouring a new concrete surface. These upgrades will allow the building to be used for other events in the off-season, making it a year round facility, as well as reducing energy costs through more efficient cooling of the ice surface.
“ The Government of Saskatchewan understands the importance of the Wakaw arena to a healthy and active community, ” said Kirsch. “ Our investment in this project will increase recreational opportunities that will benefit the whole community. ”
" The Town of Wakaw is extremely pleased with the financial assistance the community has received for the arena floor project, " said Mayor Ed Kidd. " It will make this facility a year round venue to hold various events and improve the energy efficiency of the artificial ice plant. "
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
