The City of Surrey will move forward with improvements to the Newton Recreation Centre, thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada's Economic Action Plan.
Today, Nina Grewal, Member of Parliament for Fleetwood-Port Kells, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced federal funding for the project, which will create jobs for Surrey.
“ I'm pleased to announce our Government's support for the revitalization of Newton Recreation Centre, ” said MP Grewal. “ Investments such as this will help put Canadians to work, encourage greater participation in physical activity and use of recreational facilities, and ensure that communities across the West have access to the essential infrastructure we need today, and in the future. ”
Funding of $133,333 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada's Economic Action Plan.
The City of Surrey is renovating and upgrading the Newton Recreation Centre's preschool room, hallways, bathrooms and common areas. The project will enhance recreation spaces for a wide range of programs, and help accommodate the needs of Surrey's rapidly growing population.
“ We are thrilled to receive news that the City of Surrey is receiving recreation infrastructure funding for this project. It will allow us to keep pace with the growing demand for sport and recreation services within the Newton area, ” said Mayor Dianne Watts.
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
