Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced today that he will visit New York City on September 22 and 24 to meet Mayor Michael Bloomberg, to participate in the United Nations Summit on Climate Change and to attend a leaders' meeting of the Friends of Democratic Pakistan. The Prime Minister will also participate in the G20 Summit in Pittsburgh on September 24 and 25.
“Canada looks forward to continuing work with our international partners at the Pittsburgh G20 Summit,” said the Prime Minister. “Canada has demonstrated leadership by implementing an ambitious fiscal stimulus package. We will continue to advocate for the full implementation of stimulus measures and the need to take concrete steps to liberalize trade and strengthen domestic financial sector regulation to facilitate a sustainable and balanced economic recovery.”
The Pittsburgh G20 Summit will focus on advancing the commitments made at the London Summit last April. Leaders are expected to discuss measures to strengthen the global financial system, support developing countries affected by the crisis, reform international financial institutions and resist protectionism. Leaders will also discuss financing issues related to a post-2012 climate change agreement to help ensure a successful outcome at the United Nations conference in Copenhagen in December.
This Summit will bring together leaders from over 20 countries that participated in the London and Washington Summits, as well as representatives of several key international organizations, such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
Finance Minister Jim Flaherty will also attend the Pittsburgh Summit.
