The Board of Education of School District No.36 will undertake upgrades to Queen Elizabeth Secondary School thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
Today, Nina Grewal, Member of Parliament for Fleetwood-Port Kells, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced federal funding for the Queen Elizabeth Secondary School project that will improve recreational opportunities in Surrey.
“Our Government, through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, is taking immediate action to reduce the effects of the economic slowdown,” said MP Grewal. “With projects such as this one, we are creating immediate jobs and building the foundation for Surrey’s future growth and prosperity.”
Funding of $17,000 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
The project will result in two new tennis courts and one new basketball court. The new basketball court will also convert into a third tennis court as required. Project activities include site preparation, paving, fence and gate installation, as well as the purchase of tennis nets, posts and basketball stands. The Surrey facility will be open to the public and aims to be completed by December 31, 2009.
"On behalf of the board, I thank the federal government for its $17-thousand contribution as I know this project could not go ahead without its support," says Surrey Board of Education chair Laurae McNally. "I also congratulate the Queen Elizabeth school community for raising the same amount. Our board is also contributing $17-thousand dollars, as well as the ongoing maintenance costs for the project, and together, we are providing a new, much-needed facility for our students and the community."
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
