The Town of Cape St. George is improving access to a historically significant portion of the community with support from the Government of Canada’s Community Adjustment Fund (CAF), a key economic stimulus initiative under the Government’s Economic Action Plan.
The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, Minister for the Atlantic Gateway and Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced an investment of just over $103,000 from the Government of Canada, to support the upgrading of a road and replacement of a bridge to the resettled community
“The project is an opportunity for the Town of Cape St. George and surrounding region to enhance tourism infrastructure,” said Minister MacKay. “The road upgrades and the replacement of the bridge create direct and indirect employment, and the overall project will attract more visitors to an area with strong tourism potential thanks to its history as a traditional Newfoundland village with a French heritage.”
Improvements to the Loretto access road and bridge are part of a comprehensive trail building plan adopted by the Town of Cape St. George in 2005. Loretto has been resettled for a number of years. The project will complement ongoing activity such as the Boutte du Cap Park, a large park at the end of the Port au Port Peninsula with a scenic view of Bay St. George and the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
“In the past 15 years the road loop around the Port au Port Peninsula has allowed the Town of Cape St. George and the surrounding area to develop a tourism industry,” said Cape St. George Mayor Peter Fenwick. “However we still need to further develop tourism attractions to encourage tourists to visit the region. The Loretto trail will allow visitors to travel through a resettled community with interpretive signage and educate them on the history of this traditional French fishing community.”
Over the next two years, the Community Adjustment Fund will deliver a total of $1 billion in economic stimulus to communities across the country in support of local economic development.
