Witless Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador
The Town of Witless Bay will upgrade the Witless Bay ballpark and adjacent recreation facility with support provided by the Government of Canada through its Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) Program, a key economic stimulus initiative under Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, Minister for the Atlantic Gateway and Minister responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced an investment of almost $30,000 for significant upgrades to the facility.
“The Witless Bay ballpark and adjacent playground are an integral part of the community, providing young and old alike with a venue for sport and family activities,” said Minister MacKay. “Making these improvements generates local economic activity, supports local jobs and ensures that families, teams and individuals continue to have access to this important facility.”
The project involves replacing the infield at the ball park with new base material and sand. It also includes site preparation at the playground area, the purchase and installation of playground equipment and construction of a multi-purpose court.
“This project will enhance a well-used and popular piece of our municipal infrastructure,” said Pat Curran, Mayor, Town of Witless Bay. “It will also position us well to host regional tournaments in the coming years.”
Canada’s Economic Action Plan provided $500 million over two years for the RInC program. It supports the upgrading and renewal of recreational facilities in communities across the country, generates local economic activity, supports jobs and encourages increased participation in physical activity and community building. The RInC program is being delivered throughout Atlantic Canada by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.
Municipalities, First Nations governments, community organizations and other not-for-profit entities in Atlantic Canada that have eligible projects that can be completed before March 31, 2011, are invited to submit their proposals.

The RInC program is being delivered throughout Atlantic Canada by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.
