The Prime Minister participated today in the groundbreaking for construction on a new $40-million Applied Health Institute at Niagara College in Welland, Ontario. The school is receiving federal and provincial funding totalling $40 million through the Knowledge Infrastructure Program under Canada’s Economic Action Plan and the Government of Ontario’s 2009 Budget. Together, the governments of Canada and Ontario are investing $1.5 billion in 49 projects at Ontario’s post-secondary institutions through the Knowledge Infrastructure Program and Ontario’s 2009 Budget.
The Applied Health Institute will accommodate key health programs and related community health services in a new integrated facility and create space for 1,000 new students each year. The new building will also provide space for the high-demand Practical Nursing and Personal Support Worker programs, and will accommodate the college’s dental programs and the community dental clinic.
About the Knowledge Infrastructure Program
The Knowledge Infrastructure Program, part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, is a two-year $2-billion economic stimulus measure to support infrastructure enhancement at post-secondary institutions across Canada. In many cases, today’s infrastructure does not adequately meet the needs of today’s research and teaching activities, and the foundation for long-term economic growth is through investment in infrastructure at post-secondary institutions. To date, $955 million has been committed for college and university infrastructure across Canada in 2009-10, with 381 projects having begun to date.
The Knowledge Infrastructure Program has two components. The university component gives preference to projects that can improve the quality of research and development at the institution. The college component supports projects at other post-secondary institutions, such as colleges, publicly funded polytechnic schools and institutes of technology, which will strengthen their ability to deliver advanced knowledge and skills training.
