Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement on the 60th Anniversary of the People’s Republic of China:
“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I am pleased to mark the 39th anniversary of Canada-China diplomatic relations and the 60th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China.
“These significant milestones afford us the opportunity to reflect on events that have shaped China’s history, as well as the shared history between our two nations. Over the last thirty years, China has emerged as one of the world’s fastest growing economies and a key player on the world stage. Canada has observed this remarkable rise over the course of our longstanding friendship with China.
“October 13th of this year marks 39 years of diplomatic relations between Canada and China. This seminal moment set our two countries on a course towards a long-term, mutually-advantageous partnership. Today, Canada and China enjoy an increasingly prosperous relationship as innovative and engaged partners.
“Our Government has made this relationship a priority, as demonstrated by the eighteen ministerial visits to China since 2006. This year, we were pleased to announce the opening of new trade offices in Chengdu, Shenzhen, Nanjing, Qingdao, Shenyang and Wuhan, which will expand trade and commercial opportunities in this dynamic market.
“Canadians of Chinese origin have played important roles in the social, political and economic development of this country. They have also fostered bonds of friendship and family between our two nations. These strong ties prompted Canada to donate $75 million in aid to the people of Beichuan County in Sichuan province following the devastating earthquake last year.
“As we approach the anniversary of our enduring diplomatic relationship, there is much to be optimistic about. Canada is committed to building a forward-looking, principled and meaningful friendship with China for decades to come.”
