Ottawa, Ontario (November 30, 2009) - The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, today announced the reappointment of Jerry Lampert to the British Columbia Treaty Commission.
Mr. Lampert, who previously held the title of President and Chief Executive Officer of the Business Council of British Columbia for 15 years, was originally appointed in December of 2007. He has been a key advocate for the development of better business relationships with British Columbia First Nations.
Mr. Lampert will continue to bring his considerable expertise and determination in an effort to assist the British Columbia Treaty Commission in realizing its mandate. This appointment also demonstrates Canada's commitment to the British Columbia treaty process by ensuring the smooth and stable operation of this very important organization.
The British Columbia Treaty Commission is the independent and neutral body established in 1992 to facilitate the negotiation of treaties with British Columbia First Nations. The Treaty Commission also plays an important role in facilitation and funding, as well as public education and outreach concerning the treaty process for British Columbia.
In order to have strong public institutions, the right individuals with the necessary expertise and skill sets are essential. Governor-in-Council appointments are based on the guiding principles of competency, professionalism and accessibility to all Canadians.
