December 10, 2009, Montreal, Quebec - On October 22, 2008, at the Havre-Aubert courthouse, Madelimer inc., located in Grande-Entrée, Magdalen Islands, pled guilty and was convicted of three counts of violating the Fish Inspection Act and Regulations.
The Court of Québec ordered the company to pay a fine of $3,000 per count for a total of $9,000.
The offences, which occurred between May 14 and 18, 2007, involved in two cases the company’s shipping lobster to another province without having a certificate of registration as required under the Fish Inspection Regulations. The third count involved packaging lobster in a false or misleading manner under the terms of the Regulations, thereby contravening the Fish Inspection Act.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is responsible for enforcing a variety of federal statutes, including the Fish Inspection Act and Regulations. This Act governs the shipping of fish or marine plants between provinces.
