December 10, 2009, Montreal, Quebec - On March 10, 2009, at the Quebec City court house, Anjou-based Transport Logi-Pro inc. entered a guilty plea and was convicted of two counts of violating the Meat Inspection Act and regulations.
The Court of Québec ordered the company to pay fines of $8,000 and $1,000, respectively.
The offences, which occurred between February 4 and July 16, 2008, involved having admitted meat products to a registered establishment despite the absence of evidence that the meat products had been inspected in another registered establishment, which violates the Meat Inspection Act.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is responsible for enforcing a variety of federal statutes, including the Meat Inspection Act and Regulations. The Meat Inspection Act governs the import and export of and interprovincial trade in meat products, the registration of establishments, and the inspection of animals and meat products in registered establishments, and sets the standards for those establishments and for the animals slaughtered and the meat products prepared in those establishments.
