NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR – Four individuals and a fish buying company were recently charged with violating federal fishery regulations following investigations by fishery officers from the Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) detachment in Marystown and Bay Roberts.
- On October 7, 2009, in provincial court at Grand Falls-Windsor, Evans Fisheries of English Harbour West, was fined $1000 for possession of V-notched lobster. On June 16, 2008, fishery officers detected the violation during a vessel patrol near English Harbour West.
- On October 6, 2009, in provincial court at Grand Bank, Neil Farrell of Marystown was convicted of allowing a person not named in his licence to fish his vessel and was fined $500. On September 5, 2008, fishery officers conducted an inspection of the vessel Bay Rose in Burin and discovered the infraction.
- On September 8, 2009, in provincial court at Harbour Grace, David Porter of Coley’s Point, Terrance Layman of Gull Island and Lorne Gifford of Port De Grave were each fined $500 for exceeding their daily quota of capelin during the 2008 fishing season. Each individual was also ordered to pay the value of the excess capelin taken: Mr. Porter $1435, Mr. Layman $1371 and Mr. Gifford $1120.
