Cst. Rodzor Jean-Baptiste's Story
His inspiring story started in Haiti.
One of the eight RCMP members with the honour of carrying the nation's flag on the Olympic stage for opening and closing ceremonies, Haitian born Constable Rodzor Jean-Baptiste had the support of his fellow Mounties when two days after his wife arrived in Haiti this past January, a powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the coast of the Caribbean nation affecting nearly three million people.
He says "I don't have any family here but during the three days I waited to hear from my wife, my co-workers began showing up at my house, bringing food and waiting with me and my daughters. It was then I realized I was surrounded by family. The RCMP is my family. Their support and comfort got us through those brutal hours."
His wife is back safe in Canada now, and one month to the date of the earthquake, Jean-Baptiste was a part of the troop that carried the Canadian flag across the Olympic stage during the opening ceremonies. Jean-Baptiste says, "You hear the story of Canada. You are told what a great country this is…I am Haitian, I am a Mountie. We are Canadians…I want to show them (Haitians) what you can become in Canada."
