The City of Fort Saskatchewan is moving forward with upgrades to two local skating facilities thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
“Upgrading these skating rinks will ensure that residents have access to the recreational infrastructure that builds strong, vibrant communities,
” said Tim Uppal, Member of Parliament for Edmonton-Sherwood Park, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification.
Thanks to federal support, skating rinks at RCMP and Mowat parks are receiving landscaping, new boards and energy-efficient LED lighting. Upgrades at Mowat Park also include replacing the existing multi-use building with a new, heated facility containing changing areas, washrooms, storage and office space. Investing in the parks ensures that these facilities continue to support both community members and recreational organizations for years to come, while encouraging greater participation in physical activity.
Funding of $171,666 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
“We are extremely thankful and grateful to the Government of Canada for its continued support of programs and projects in Fort Saskatchewan,
" said Mayor Jim Sheasgreen. "Through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada program, we've made significant upgrades to two outdoor rinks including the replacement of old lighting with new energy efficient lighting, and that in turn supports our community sustainability plan.
"
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
