Delta, British Columbia
The Corporation of Delta is moving forward with plans to expand the Sungod Recreation Centre thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
Today, Nina Grewal, Member of Parliament for Fleetwood-Port Kells, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced federal funding for the recreation centre expansion that will create jobs in Delta.
“I’m pleased to announce our Government’s support for Delta families through the Economic Action Plan,” said MP Grewal. “The expansion of the Sungod Recreation Centre will create jobs and ensure that Delta residents and visitors have access to the essential recreational opportunities they need today and in the future.”
Funding of $936,400 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
With this investment, the Corporation of Delta is expanding the centre from 3,444 square feet to 7,858 square feet. Project activities include building design and engineering, mechanical and electrical upgrades, as well as structural and building envelope upgrades. This project will increase opportunities for physical activity for residents in the community and surrounding areas.
“Expansion of the Sungod Recreation Centre weightroom is very exciting for the community of North Delta. The RInC program funding ensures that the Sungod Recreation Centre fitness area will increase by more than 50%. This significant increase in capacity will remove the barriers we presently experience by giving the population access to fitness programs and equipment they need to live a healthy balanced lifestyle. I would like to thank the Federal Government for its generous financial contribution towards this important initiative, as in partnership we fulfil the economic and job creation vision through the upgrading of Delta’s infrastructure,” said Mayor Lois E. Jackson.
The Sungod Recreation Centre is a multi-purpose facility which includes five pools, a sauna, steam room, arena, weight room, aerobic studio, gymnasium, meeting rooms and a physiotherapy clinic and is home to the North Delta Devils and the North Delta Minor Hockey Association.
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities. A total of almost $153 million in RInC funding will be invested across the four western provinces by Western Economic Diversification Canada.
