In November 2007, RCMP Constable Douglas Scott was tragically killed in the line of duty. Today, a Nunavut jury found Pingoatuk Kolola guilty of first degree murder in his death.
Doug made a positive impression on all those he came into contact with in his short time with the RCMP. He was a dedicated member who was loved and respected by his colleagues and the community of Kimmirut where he served and ultimately gave his life.
This loss has been felt not only by RCMP members force-wide, but also throughout the law enforcement community. While today's decision will not ease the painful memory of this tragic event, it hopefully offers the Scott family solace and provides his RCMP family with closure to this sad chapter in our history.
To all those who investigated this tragic event and to those who successfully prosecuted the case, I am proud of and grateful for your hard work and dedication.
And to the Scott family, the RCMP once again extends our deepest sympathies.
William J.S. Elliott
Commissioner
