Powell River, British Columbia
The Powell River Gymnastics Society is moving forward with facility upgrades thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
“The Max Cameron Gymnasium provides great health and fitness benefits to Powell River in this Olympic and Paralympic Year, and this project will upgrade this important facility,” said John Weston, Powell River’s Member of Parliament, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification.
With the investment, the Powell River Gymnastics Society will retrofit the Max Cameron Gymnasium. Work includes dance studio renovations, washroom upgrades and construction of a public viewing area. The not-for-profit society has operated for more than 20 years and provides services to over 260 members, as well as the local elementary school.
Funding of $37,800 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
“Today’s investment from the federal government will help us meet a growing need in the community for recreational opportunities,” said Dave Craigen, President. “We are excited to undertake these changes and ensure that gymnasts throughout Powell River have access to a new and improved facility.”
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. In total, WD has approved 718 RInC projects that will use all of the funding available in the West. These projects are providing a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
