OTTAWA, ONTARIO (March 26, 2010) – The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians announced today that Canada is moving to create a forum for talks between the Innu residing in both Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador regarding their overlapping claims.
"There is no question that negotiations and dialogue are the best way to resolve issues such as these," said Minister Strahl. "We encourage all parties to start a dialogue in a spirit of good will and respect to try to find common ground. Canada is ready and willing to take steps to assist in this process."
A discussion forum could be quickly established to include all interested parties. Should all sides agree to meet, Canada is willing to provide funding for both Innu parties to enter into exploratory talks. If necessary, Canada is also willing to appoint a special representative to act as a facilitator in hopes of resolving these overlapping claim issues.
Canada is currently negotiating land and resource rights with the Innu of Newfoundland and Labrador and remains committed to reaching agreements that will balance the interests of both parties and all Canadians in general.
