OTTAWA, April 14, 2010 - The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, today announced the names of six young culinary school graduates who have been selected to participate in the culinary program at Expo 2010. The Expo will run from May 1 to October 31, 2010, in Shanghai, China.
"Wayne Murphy, our Executive Chef at the Canada Pavilion and Chef Professor and Coordinator of the Culinary Arts Program at La Cité collégiale, will lead a team of young graduates from culinary schools across Canada. Their chief responsibility will be to cater special events at the Canada Pavilion at Expo and introduce visitors to Canadian products and Canadian cuisine," said Minister Moore.
The students are:
- Melissa Hryb - Red River College, Winnipeg, Manitoba
- Hugo Martineau - Collège Lasalle, Montréal, Quebec
- Andrew Newman -Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, Edmonton, Alberta
- Junior Thériault - Collège Mérici, Québec City, Quebec
- Mariane Weber - La Cité collégiale, Ottawa, Ontario
- Mandy Wingert - Holland College, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island
"The Expo culinary program provides young Canadians with international experience just as they are poised to begin their careers. I know they will be able to benefit from the vast experience of Chef Wayne Murphy, who headed up our culinary program at the Canada Pavilion at Expo 2005 in Aichi, Japan," added Minister Moore.
Expo 2010 is expected to be the biggest international exposition ever, with 242 countries and organizations taking part. With the assistance of Cirque du Soleil, Canada is creating a stunning pavilion that will be the jewel of Expo 2010 and an excellent showcase for Canada's theme "The Living City: inclusive, sustainable, creative." The Government of Canada expects to welcome between 5 and 5.5 million visitors to the Canada Pavilion: 30 000 per day.
Expo 2010 will allow Canada to advance its foreign and trade policy goals, strengthen economic, diplomatic, and cultural ties with China, and shape and strengthen Canada's brand in China.
The International Expositions Program , part of the Department of Canadian Heritage, is responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing Canada's participation in international expositions sanctioned by the Bureau of International Expositions.
