The Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway announced today that ACOA will provide $50,000 to the City of St. John’s to support a new JUNO Awards event— JUNOs on George..
“Music fans from across the country have long made their way to George Street to experience the intimacy and magic of its many live music venues,” said Minister Ashfield. “So it is with great pride that the Government of Canada, through ACOA, announces its support for JUNOs on George, which unites Canada’s biggest music event with one of the most legendary performance grounds in the country.”
Hosted by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) and its broadcast partner CTV, JUNOs on George will transform George Street into a live viewing party for the 2010 JUNO Awards broadcast. ACOA’s funding will provide technical and production support for the event, which will take place on Sunday, April 18 from 6:00 pm to 10 pm.
ACOA has also provided CARAS with $500,000 to support the organization of the 2010 JUNO Awards in St. John’s; this funding was announced in August of 2009.
“We are delighted that ACOA is partnering with the City of St. John’s to create this new JUNO Awards event on George Street,” said St. John’s Mayor Dennis O'Keefe. “In 2002, our city and our province created a JUNO Weekend that the music industry and thousands of fans have never forgotten. This week, we’re delighted to partner with CARAS and CTV to create even more memorable experiences as we showcase our talent and our city on the national stage."
The Government of Canada’s investment in JUNOs on George is provided through ACOA’s Business Development Program.
