The Musqueam Indian Band is moving forward with the construction of a multi-purpose community centre thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
“Through this investment, we are creating immediate jobs while providing for a new community centre that will serve and strengthen the community for many years to come,” said the Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency and Member of Parliament for Chilliwack – Fraser Canyon, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification.
The new community centre will include a gymnasium, a basketball court and a fitness centre. It will provide opportunity for year-round recreational activities in the community, benefitting the Musqueam Indian Band.
Funding of $1 million is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
“This new facility will be the project of the generation providing much needed recreational amenities and leisure space for Band members. We will be able to host sports tournaments, large community gatherings, and house our many recreational and fitness programs. This is a great day for the Musqueam and we are proud to partner with the federal government to help make this a reality,” said Chief Ernest C. Campbell, Musqueam Indian Band.
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. In total, WD has approved 718 RInC projects that will use all of the funding available in the West. These projects are helping provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
