ST. JOHN'S, April 17, 2010 - The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, today announced that the Government of Canada is renewing sustainable funding agreements with administrators of the Canada Music Fund: the Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings (FACTOR), MUSICACTION, and the SOCAN Foundation.
Over $78 million will be distributed to these partners over the next five years, under the New Musical Works, Collective Initiatives, and Creators' Assistance components of the Canada Music Fund.
"Our Government is pleased to continue supporting the Canadian music industry and building on its success, by renewing sustainable funding agreements with our trusted partners FACTOR, MUSICACTION, and the SOCAN Foundation," said Minister Moore.
"We recognize the vital role of these partners in administering the Canada Music Fund," added Minister Moore. "They have assisted countless Canadian music artists, record labels, and other entrepreneurs and helped them develop their craft."
Upon learning the news, FACTOR's President and CEO Heather Ostertag said, "The Honourable James Moore and the Government of Canada have clearly demonstrated their commitment to Canadian culture by providing a five-year commitment to the Canadian music industry. This commitment will ensure that FACTOR can continue to support Canadian artists, taking their music to the world. Canadian talent is unique, it is distinct, and the Canada Music Fund has played a strong role in the success of our artists."
"The SOCAN Foundation is extremely pleased to continue once again as administrator of the Creators' Assistance Component of the Canada Music Fund," said Rick MacMillan, Manager, SOCAN Foundation. "We thank the Minister of Canadian Heritage and the Government of Canada for their strong vision in contributing to the many activities this component is designed to support, and we know that songwriters and composers from all regions of Canada will benefit enormously in furthering their craft and knowledge of the music industry."
Canada Music Fund (CMF) is the Government of Canada's main support program for Canadian music. Featuring five complementary components administered directly by the Department of Canadian Heritage or in collaboration with federal and private organizations, the CMF is designed to increase Canadians' access to Canadian music by enhancing the industry's ability to compete and excel in domestic and international markets. It supports the production and marketing of a wide range of Canadian music, as well as national and international touring, music showcases, conferences, and award shows, as well as professional development.
