INNISFAIL, Alta., April 19, 2010 – Young Canadians have come to the rescue and provided ten RCMP puppies with names. We are pleased to announce the winning entries for this year’s “Name the Puppy” contest held by the RCMP Police Dog Service Training Centre (PDSTC), “Depot” Division, in Innisfail, Alberta.
For nine years, children across Canada have been providing names for RCMP Police Service Dogs. This year, a record-braking 9,125 entries were submitted with some great names representing the noble character of the German Shepherds used as general duty police dogs by the RCMP. Submissions had to begin with the letter “C”.
For multiple entries of the same name, the committee selected one winner by draw. The winners and their successful entries are:
- Cara: Shae Dauphinee, age 11, Fort McMurray, Alberta
- Cash: Delta Haymes, age 14, Thames Ville, Ontario
- Casper: Gabrielle Peters, age 8, Airdrie, Alberta
- Casey: Maya Petreny, age 8, Moosomin, Saskatchewan
- Cassie: Keiran Leboe, age 11, Prince George, British Columbia
- Charlie: Joshua Milligan, age 10, White Rock, British Columbia
- Chase: Kristen Walsh, age 11, Dunville, Newfoundland and Labrador
- Clay: Brennan Dahl-Crowe, age 9, New Glasgow, Nova Scotia
- Coda: Laura Nelson, age 8, Fort Liard, Northwest Territories
- Cody: Julia Leahy, age 10, Fredericton, New Brunswick
There were 330 entries from classrooms. Winning entries were selected for the creativity and originality of their submission.
- Colby Village Elementary School, Mr. Pierce’s Grade 6 Class, Colby, Nova Scotia, which submitted the name “Crosby”
- Hampton Park School, Mrs. Yam’s ESL Class, Coquitlam, British Columbia
- Blumenfeld School, Ms. Gosselin’s Grades 1–3 classroom, Winkler, Manitoba
The individual winners will each receive an 8×10-inch laminated photograph of their “officially” named puppy, an official RCMP ball cap, a plush dog named “Justice” after the first puppy from our breeding program that graduated as a RCMP service dog, and a certificate.

The RCMP Police Dog Service Training Centre, “Depot” Division, is the national training centre in for all RCMP police dog teams. Currently, there are 135 multi-purpose operational dog teams in Canada and 24 specialty dogs that detect narcotics or explosives. The RCMP Police Service Dog Breeding Program has produced over 120 working dogs that have been in service with the RCMP, 80 working dogs with other agencies and 30 breeding females for the program.
