Saint John, New Brunswick – Mr. Rodney Weston, Member of Parliament for Saint John, announced today on behalf of the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, that the federal government will contribute $200,000 towards technical studies that will be undertaken by the Saint John Community Harbour Authority.
“This is an investment in the future of the fishing industry in Saint John,” said Mr. Weston. “The Government of Canada understands that safe and efficient harbours are essential for fishers and have many benefits for fishing communities across the country.”
This federal investment will supplement funding that the Saint John Community Harbour Authority will seek from additional sources. The Harbour Authority is undertaking these technical studies to evaluate options and identify the best solution to address the needs of small vessels and the commercial fishing industry in Saint John, New Brunswick.
This investment is in addition to the $33.2 million provided under Canada’s Economic Action Plan for small craft harbours in New Brunswick over two years and the $15 million in regular program funding for repair and improvement projects this year.
