Freeport, Nova Scotia
A newly constructed fire hall has opened its doors to serve the community of Freeport, thanks to the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF), a key economic stimulus initiative contained in the Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
Greg Kerr, Member of Parliament for West Nova, on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway, joined local firefighters, community members and government representatives today, to celebrate the Freeport Fire Hall’s grand opening. MP Kerr announced a $242,719 Government of Canada investment in the project in October 2009.
“The opening of the Freeport Fire Hall is an important milestone for this community,” said MP Kerr. “Our Government is committed to supporting projects that enhance the infrastructure and vitality of communities across Canada.”
The 6,000-square-foot facility features a fully-accessible community room and kitchen with a serving capacity of 161 persons. The facility will also serve as an EMO Center for the community in general as well as an official emergency gathering place for the neighbouring school and seniors’ complex.
“This new fire hall is the result of a vision and many hours of hard work by the firemen of this Department,” said Chief Gerald Moore. “It was also made possible with the support of the local communities and grants from both provincial and federal governments.”
Canada’s Economic Action Plan provided $1 billion over two years for the CAF program, to address the short-term economic needs of Canadian communities impacted by the global recession. This national economic stimulus initiative supports projects that create jobs and maintain employment in and around communities that have experienced significant job losses and lack alternative employment opportunities. The CAF program is delivered in the region by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).
