The Fort Rouge Curling Club is moving forward with renovations to the curling club thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada's Economic Action Plan; and to the City of Winnipeg.
"The Fort Rouge Curling Club is an important part of our community, and this project will ensure that local residents have access to this facility for many years to come," said Rod Bruinooge, Member of Parliament for Winnipeg South, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification.
"The City of Winnipeg remains committed to ensuring renewal of our recreational infrastructure," said Councillor Gord Steeves (St. Vital) on behalf of Mayor Sam Katz. "This facility will continue to be a vital part of our community and provide our residents with a viable facility for active participation."
The Fort Rouge Curling Club is using this funding to make significant improvements to its facility, including improving the viewing space; installing a reverse osmosis water system; and upgrading the washrooms, lighting, and the refrigeration plant.
Funding of $52,115 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada's Economic Action Plan. The City of Winnipeg is contributing $35,000 to this project.
"Fort Rouge Curling Club continually strives to upgrade our facilities to become a more efficient business and to increase the comfort level for our curlers and visitors," said Jeff Hodge, Manager of the Fort Rouge Curling Club. "The Recreational Infrastructure funding will allow us to proceed with necessary improvements such as the insulation of our ice walls, the installation of a new roof to our clubrooms and the installation of a reverse osmosis water system, to name a few. Once the project is completed, Fort Rouge will be a more efficient business by reducing our energy consumption, while providing an increased level of service to our curlers and guests. The RInC funding has proved invaluable in helping us reach these goals."
The RInC program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. In total, Western Economic Diversification Canada has approved 718 RInC projects that will use all of the funding available in the West. These projects are helping provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
