Ottawa, Ontario (May 12, 2010) - The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians issued the following statement today:
"On the occasion of the Treaty Day at the Manitoba Legislative Assembly, the Government of Canada is proud to celebrate the treaties and their importance with all Manitobans.
Treaties are an integral part of our history that define Canada's ongoing relationship with First Nations. They are solemn agreements that set out promises, obligations and benefits for all parties.
I am pleased that the Government of Canada has the opportunity to support Manitoba Aboriginal and Northern Affairs, the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, and the Treaty Relations Commission of Manitoba in their efforts to honour the numbered treaties and their continued importance.
Congratulations to all the parties - federal, provincial and First Nation - who have made this day of celebration possible."
